project: Encyclopaedia Britannica CD 2000
CD-ROM design and development

Encyclopaedia Britannica asked us to design an interface for the CD-ROM and DVD version of their encyclopedia. Britannica had just completed re-working their database to contain more references between information, based on a complex array of context sensitive factors.

The interface we designed separates the navigation into different levels. In addition to the basic program controls, the user has a separate panel of navigation items that "turn on" based on their relationship to the current piece of information. For example, when showing a biography of Van Gogh, our interface awakens with links to timelines, media elements, and related articles about the artist.

Our work on BCD2000 greatly improved the presentation and delivery of the encyclopedia's venerable content and made the user's experience richer, more efficient, and more fun.
